Witch Tok Check-In and Reflections

 Witch Tok Check-In and Reflections

My first blog post for this class reflected on the WitchTok tarot card readings that frequently appeared on my TikTok algorithm. It feels fitting to close with a similar focus, now informed by the knowledge I’ve gained over the course of this class.

To conduct my review, I simply searched “WitchTok” and explored the videos that came up. Much like the examples we watched during the WitchTok presentation, many videos featured themes such as “Signs You’re a Natural Born Witch” or showcased daily rituals of modern witches. However, I noticed an increased emphasis on videos where practitioners described witchcraft as their primary spiritual practice, explicitly distancing themselves from Christianity. This stood out to me, as we’ve spent considerable time discussing the historical and contemporary divides between religion and witchcraft. It’s intriguing to see that tension persist today, though I had expected there might be more overlap between the two in modern contexts.

My WitchTok Search

One aspect of WitchTok that immediately caught my attention was the range of spells being cast. For instance, I came across a video of someone using a pig’s heart in a curse. According to the creator, the pig’s heart was chosen because of its similarity to a human heart. In contrast, other videos featured spells using common ingredients like lavender and tarragon. This diversity reminded me of what we learned in the first book of the class—that witchcraft encompasses a wide range of practices, from blending herbs for mundane purposes to performing rituals with more extreme and symbolic elements like a pig’s heart.

Reflecting on my first blog, I remember wondering how people could trust random strangers on TikTok to provide reliable tarot readings. That question still lingers. Throughout this class—and even now—I’ve wrestled with my beliefs about witchcraft. Is it truly possible, or are its effects merely coincidences? After everything we’ve read and discussed, I find myself open to the possibility that some forms of divination or spiritual insight might be real, though I’m unsure of their extent. For example, while I wouldn’t pay a WitchTok creator to cast a spell for me, I remain curious about psychic readings and the use of tools like crystals.

One fascinating discovery from WitchTok was seeing clips of Tyler the Hollywood Medium. Before this class, I might have dismissed such shows entirely, but now I’m intrigued by how psychic abilities are presented and how they align with some of the concepts we’ve explored. This shift in perspective has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the class for me.

Overall, WitchTok is a captivating corner of the internet. It’s entertaining, widely followed, and, like many online spaces, requires a critical eye when evaluating its legitimacy. One key takeaway from this class has been the importance of questioning what we see and hear. At the same time, I’ve grown more open to exploring ideas that don’t perfectly align with my own beliefs. This class has encouraged me to engage with perspectives that challenge my worldview, helping me better understand others, along with myself.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this course and hope to carry forward the open-mindedness it has inspired. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and grow.
